Where Do Senior Product Professionals in Panama Gain Their Experience?

  • US companies hold 37 of Panama’s 192 SEM licenses, more than any other country.
  • Experience at a US company’s Panama office is experience US leaders already know how to read.

A US hiring manager gets a resume from Panama City for a senior product role. The first thing they check is the employer list. Dell. 3M. A couple of years at Visa.

That list is pretty common in Panama. Many of the country’s senior product professionals built their careers inside the regional headquarters of multinationals, and a good share of those companies are based in the US.

Panama hosts 192 companies under its Multinational Headquarters (SEM) regime as of May 2026. The list includes Maersk, Nestle, BMW, Visa, and McKinsey & Company.

Dell is one of them. Its Panama facility was finished in 2003 on the old Howard Air Base, a few minutes outside Panama City. 3M serves 19 Latin American countries from its Panama hub and announced an extra $52 million for its regional office and a manufacturing facility.

These offices run real regional work. Under the license, they can handle:

  • Business development
  • Product and service development
  • Operations and logistics management
  • Treasury and financial management
  • Technical assistance

Product and service development is on that list. That’s one place Panama’s senior product people learn the job.

Working in one of these offices means working inside a US corporate organization. The org chart, the planning cycle, and the way a product gets approved match what the teams in Round Rock or St. Paul deal with. Just a different office.

The roles are often technical, too. SEM companies have created about 10,000 direct jobs, and Panamanians hold about half of them. A lot of those jobs are in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, financial services, and the digital economy.

For a US hiring manager, that takes out a lot of the guesswork. You don’t have to translate the resume, because the candidate has likely worked the same way your own team does. How much that varies from one company to the next, the data doesn’t say.

New hires who already know how a US company runs need less time to get up to speed, because the processes and expectations aren’t new to them.

If you’re building a product or commercial team for Latin America, look closely at where candidates have worked. In Panama, there’s a decent chance it was a US company’s regional office.
